Wild Bush Honey Ant Brown by Audrey Martin Napanangka
Aboriginal women gather Honey Ants from nests located under Mulga Trees by digging a half a meter around the entrance of the tree roots, where the storer ants generally reside. The ants construct nests in red, flat, sandy soil under a tree or bush in central Australia around Alice Springs. The entrance is camouflaged amongst dead litter, and locating them requires a careful eye and skilled tracking. Honey Ants are unique in using their own bodies as living storage but have additional functionality beyond storing food. Some store liquids, body fat, and water from insect prey brought to them by worker ants. When food is scarce, they can serve as a food source for their fellow ants.
